Deebo Samuel might not be entirely satisfied with the San Francisco 49ers, and that could work in the New England Patriots’ favor as they search for a star wide receiver for next season.
On Monday, Samuel expressed frustration on social media about his performance this season, writing on X (formerly Twitter), “Not struggling at all just not getting the ball!!!!!!!” Statistically, this season is shaping up to be one of his worst since entering the league in 2019, aside from 2020.
He has recorded 40 receptions on 64 targets for 553 yards and one touchdown, alongside 32 carries for 92 rushing yards and another touchdown.
The Patriots have shown interest in Samuel before.
In April, NFL insider Josina Anderson reported that New England had initial discussions with the 49ers about trading for the receiver.
Samuel is signed through 2025 on a $17.55 million contract but is likely to seek a new extension. With the Patriots projected to lead the NFL in cap space next season, they could afford both the trade and the extension.
Additionally, the 49ers might be open to moving Samuel, having already extended Brandon Aiyuk and Jauan Jennings and drafting Ricky Pearsall with their 2024 first-round pick.
New England has its quarterback in Drake Maye, but they lack the surrounding talent to maximize his potential. Pairing him with a dynamic playmaker like Samuel could elevate the offense.
As the Patriots’ top receiver, Samuel would be the focal point, receiving plenty of opportunities.
Samuel remains a viable option for the Patriots to consider. Whether they act on it remains to be seen.
