The New England Patriots are set to have significant cap space heading into NFL free agency, giving them the flexibility to make impactful moves.
However, they also need to address the status of some key players set to hit the open market, including defensive lineman Daniel Ekuale.
Ekuale has become a regular starter on the Patriots’ defensive line, but with his contract expiring at the end of the season, he’s expected to attract considerable interest. Bleacher Report’s Matt Holder has already identified the Green Bay Packers as a potential destination for Ekuale.
“Defensive tackle has been a weakness for Green Bay in 2024, and with T.J. Slaton entering free agency, the team will need reinforcements in the middle to bolster their run defense,” Holder wrote. “Ekuale, standing 6’3″ and weighing 310 pounds, could address this issue after a strong performance in that area this season.”
Through 12 games this year, Ekuale has recorded 40 tackles and one sack. The 30-year-old, who played college football at Washington State, entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent, signing with the Cleveland Browns in 2019. After one year in Cleveland, he spent a season with the Jacksonville Jaguars before joining the Patriots in 2021.
Ekuale’s role in New England was limited in his first three seasons, but he stepped up in 2024 when Christian Barmore missed significant time due to blood clots.
While the Patriots could attempt to re-sign Ekuale, they might also prioritize finding a younger replacement. At 31 years old in January, Ekuale may no longer align with New England’s long-term plans.
