Despite Brown’s Fortunate Win, Ref Receives major Punishment in Browns’ big TNF win over Steelers came after one confusing call

The Cleveland Browns’ Thursday Night Football victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers was nothing short of dramatic.

The game had it all—intense lake-effect snow, multiple turnovers, two touchdowns from Nick Chubb, three sacks courtesy of Myles Garrett, and most surprising of all, a Browns win at the final whistle.

Although the win caused the Browns to drop slightly in the 2025 draft order for the time being, it was still a rewarding moment to see Cleveland prevail over a divisional rival like the Steelers in such a classic primetime showdown.

Coming off a tumultuous Week 11 filled with scrutiny, particularly surrounding head coach Kevin Stefanski, the Browns now get a full week to prepare before facing the Denver Broncos in another primetime matchup on Monday Night Football after Thanksgiving.

However, the victory was far from straightforward. A bizarre sequence late in the fourth quarter involved confusing officiating and strategic indecision by Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin.

The chaos began with a questionable intentional grounding non-call against Jameis Winston, who threw the ball into the ground under pressure on 3rd and 7. With no Browns receivers nearby, the officials instead penalized Cleveland five yards for illegal touching by an offensive lineman, rather than assessing a potential 15-yard grounding penalty.

The situation only grew stranger as Tomlin repeatedly changed his mind on whether to accept or decline the penalty, even burning a timeout in the process.

Ultimately, he chose to decline, leaving the Browns with a 3rd and 7 instead of a 4th and 2. Cleveland capitalized, converting the play and finishing the drive with Chubb’s second touchdown of the night.

With this win, the Browns have now defeated two divisional opponents this season. Despite an otherwise challenging year, moments like these—a gritty, snowy battle against an AFC North rival—are special for Browns fans.

While the controversial penalty decision played a role, Cleveland’s focus should remain on building momentum and sharpening their strategy for next year’s draft and free agency rather than dwelling on luck.
