The New England Patriots have several pressing needs to address this offseason. Fortunately, they are expected to have significant cap space to tackle those challenges.
While most of their issues lie on the offensive side, it’s clear their defense also needs improvement.
A top priority will be adding one or two pass rushers. Beyond that, the secondary could use reinforcements. Christian Gonzalez is emerging as a star cornerback, but with veteran Jonathan Jones likely leaving in free agency, the Patriots must find a replacement.
While targeting Charvarius Ward might be overly ambitious, New England could look to a divisional rival for a solution. New York Jets cornerback D.J. Reed is set to become a free agent in March and could be an appealing option for the Patriots.
Although Reed doesn’t have the same star power as Sauce Gardner, he has been a crucial part of the Jets’ defense. In 2024, he tallied 37 tackles, a sack, and eight passes defended. The previous season, he posted 76 tackles, an interception, a forced fumble, and nine passes defended.
A Kansas State alum, Reed began his career with the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks before joining the Jets in 2022. He began to shine in his final year in Seattle and truly broke out during his first season in New York.
While he may not be a Pro Bowl player, Reed is a dependable defensive back who would strengthen the Patriots’ secondary. Additionally, he’s likely to be more affordable than top-tier options like Ward or other high-profile defenders.
