The New England Patriots’ struggles may primarily stem from their offense, but their defense also requires significant improvement.
This season, the defensive unit has taken a noticeable step back, underscoring the need for additional pass-rushing talent and other reinforcements.
With substantial cap space available, the Patriots have the opportunity to address these needs in free agency.
However, focusing on defensive upgrades in the NFL Draft should also be a priority.
Bleacher Report’s Brent Sobleski has highlighted Louisville Cardinals defensive lineman Ashton Gillotte as a potential target for New England.
“At 275 pounds, he’s somewhat of a tweener,” Sobleski wrote about Gillotte. “He’s too small for a full-time interior role but too big and lacks the explosiveness of an every-down edge rusher. Despite that, his ability to shift across the defensive front makes him intriguing. He has recorded 21 pressures in his last three starts.”
This year, Gillotte has registered 36 tackles, seven tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks, marking a slight statistical decline from his standout 2023 season when he posted 45 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, and three forced fumbles.
Since his debut at Louisville in 2021, Gillotte has consistently contributed. As a freshman, he delivered 19 tackles, eight tackles for loss, and four sacks, followed by 24 tackles, eight tackles for loss, and seven sacks in his sophomore year.
While draft projections for Gillotte vary, he could be available for the Patriots in the third round. Either way, New England would be wise to consider him, as his versatility and skill set could provide much-needed help for their defensive line.
