Following their Week 11 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, the New England Patriots have made additional roster changes. Veteran cornerback Marco Wilson, who played 12 snaps in the game (nine on defense and three on special teams) and recorded two tackles, was waived on Monday, as reported by Adam Schefter.
Despite being the second-most experienced cornerback on the roster behind Jonathan Jones, Wilson’s defensive role had diminished, with his nine snaps marking a season low.
Wilson, 25, had been a reserve cornerback behind rising star Christian Gonzalez and Jones, a nine-year veteran.
He started the season playing nearly half the defensive snaps in some games but managed only eight total tackles in 2024.
This marks Wilson’s second stint in free agency, as he was previously waived by the Arizona Cardinals last December before being claimed by New England.
This move comes shortly after the Patriots released wide receiver Tyquan Thornton in another surprising decision. Now sitting at 3-8, with rookie quarterback Drake Maye 1-4 in his starts, New England faces a daunting Week 12 matchup against the 4-6 Miami Dolphins. Miami is riding a two-game win streak and has seen improvement with Tua Tagovailoa back under center after his stint on injured reserve.
Tagovailoa has historically been a challenge for the Patriots, boasting a perfect 6-0 record against them since entering the league in 2020. The Patriots will need to break that streak to turn their season around as they head into divisional play.
