Could be end of the road for Patriots WR as Jerod Mayo reveals impactful adjustment is coming on offense

The New England Patriots had an unexpectedly quiet NFL trade deadline, despite widespread speculation. Many anticipated the team would trade a wide receiver, with Kendrick Bourne and K.J. Osborn frequently mentioned in rumors. However, no moves were made.

Focusing on Bourne, the veteran receiver has struggled to find his footing this season. After starting the year injured, he hasn’t been able to gain momentum. Heading into Week 11, the 29-year-old has managed just eight receptions for 70 yards.

Devon Platana of Chowder & Champions speculated that Bourne could be on his way out during the offseason. According to Spotrac, the Patriots could save $5.1 million by trading or releasing him, with potential savings increasing to $6.5 million if they wait until after June 1, 2025.

Signs of his uncertain future are clear—Bourne was a healthy scratch in the Patriots’ recent win over the Chicago Bears and didn’t play a single snap. Coming into the season, he was expected to be the team’s top wide receiver when healthy, serving as a key target for rookie quarterback Drake Maye. So far, those expectations have not been met.

If New England decides to part ways with Bourne in the offseason, several teams may show interest. The Patriots could potentially secure a late-round draft pick in a trade. Unless something changes significantly, it seems likely that Bourne’s time in New England is nearing its end.

After Sunday’s game, Kendrick Bourne felt more motivated than ever.

The veteran wide receiver was benched during the Patriots’ win over the Bears, partly to give younger players more playing time and partly due to his recent performances.

How did Bourne respond to the benching?

“Kendrick has had a good week of practice. Sometimes you need — I wouldn’t call it a wake-up call, but sitting out and not getting any snaps can be a motivator,” said Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo. “He’s a driven individual and a very good player. We just need to get him going.” Mayo also confirmed that Bourne is expected to be active and play this Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams.

Speaking to A to Z Sports earlier this week, Bourne stayed optimistic about the situation.

“I’ve been through this before, being undrafted and starting from the bottom. It’s nothing new to me,” Bourne said. “It’s a blessing from God to build up a career. Seeing young guys get their opportunities is great—I want to support them and help them grow.”

He added, “I don’t take it personally or think ‘why me?’ Instead, I ask, ‘What can I do? How can I stay positive?’ I still have a lot to play for, and I know my chance will come again. I just want to be ready and make the most of it when it does.”

Bourne also shared a message for the fans: “Be patient. It’s all going to come together. The coaches have a plan, and I trust the process. I hope the fans can trust it too.”

As for what he aims to showcase on the field, Bourne said, “I want to make contested catches, get open consistently, block effectively, and make every play count. I feel like I’ve been giving my best effort, but now it’s about executing on every single play.”

Sunday offers Bourne the opportunity to prove himself once again.
