With all attention focused on the NFL trade deadline, the New England Patriots are making moves to strengthen their roster—using an unconventional approach to add talent.
The Patriots are set to sign guard Tyrese Robinson from the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad, according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss.
Robinson, 25, started 38 games at the University of Oklahoma before entering the NFL in 2022. Despite his experience and versatility, capable of playing both guard and tackle, the 6-foot-3, 317-pound lineman went undrafted. He then signed with the Washington Commanders as a rookie free agent.
After just three months in Washington, Robinson was released and subsequently joined the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad later that year. However, he was cut again in August 2023, spending his entire second season as a free agent before being picked up by the Vikings in 2024.
Though he was released again before the final roster cuts, Robinson signed with the Vikings’ practice squad, where he has spent the first nine weeks of the season.
To date, Robinson has not played in any regular-season NFL games, having only appeared in preseason contests. Now, he will provide additional depth to the Patriots’ interior offensive line.
With the roster currently full at 53 players, New England will need to make a corresponding move, which could involve another release or a trade ahead of the 4 p.m. ET deadline.
