The Cleveland Browns had a busy Tuesday, making multiple roster moves.
After trading Za’Darius Smith to the Detroit Lions, they also released a veteran defensive lineman.
According to Tom Pelissero from NFL Network, the Browns have cut ties with defensive tackle Quinton Jefferson. Jefferson, who was signed in the offseason to strengthen the team’s interior defense, became expendable as the Browns found other solutions.
By releasing him before the deadline, the Browns allowed Jefferson to choose his next team rather than go through waivers. Jefferson hadn’t played in the last four games, so his release was expected.
Quinton Jefferson’s exit was largely due to the emergence of Mike Hall Jr. Cleveland’s second-round pick missed the season’s first five games, but he has performed well in the four games since his return.
Jefferson hasn’t played since Hall’s debut, and as Cleveland’s playoff chances dwindle, they’re prioritizing developing younger players over veterans on one-year contracts.
Since his return, Hall has played in 42 percent of the defensive snaps, tallying five tackles, two quarterback hits, and a tackle for loss.
The rookie from Ohio State has also registered seven quarterback pressures, showing impressive pass-rushing ability.
Cleveland is confident enough to even play Hall on the edge, highlighting his versatility as a pass rusher.
At 280 pounds, Hall still needs to improve in run defense, but he’s already a strong interior pass rusher. Originally brought in for interior pass rush, Jefferson was ultimately replaced by Hall.
During his brief stint with the Browns, Jefferson played five games, making six tackles and a sack. It will be interesting to see which playoff contender might pick him up next.
Meanwhile, the Browns are committed to developing Hall, their promising second-rounder.
