The New England Patriots may be looking to make additional trades before the NFL trade deadline on Tuesday, having already sent pass-rusher Josh Uche to the Kansas City Chiefs.
While many trade rumors have focused on the Patriots potentially offloading talent, there are indications they might also seek to acquire new players. Reports suggest that New England is interested in enhancing its roster.
One name that has emerged as a potential target is Tennessee Titans cornerback L’Jarius Sneed. Ryan McLaughlin of Musket Fire has recommended that the Patriots consider trading for him. He notes that New England might be looking to trade Jonathan Jones, who will be a free agent at the end of the season.
McLaughlin argues that acquiring Sneed, who joined the Titans this offseason after four years with the Chiefs, could be a strategic move if Jones leaves.
Although Sneed is likely to command a significant price in terms of mid to high draft picks, he could be worth pursuing due to his size and physical play at 6’1″.
Sneed would bolster the Patriots’ secondary, partnering with Christian Gonzalez to form a formidable duo of cover cornerbacks. However, giving up a second or third-round pick might be a steep price. While Sneed is a solid player, his performance this season with the Titans hasn’t matched his previous years with the Chiefs. So far, he has recorded 23 tackles in five games but has not registered any defended passes or interceptions. In contrast, last season, he achieved 78 tackles, two interceptions, and 14 defended passes.
At 27 years old, Sneed is in his prime, with several productive years ahead of him in the NFL.
Although trading for him carries some risk, it could prove to be a significant benefit for the Patriots, who need reinforcements in their secondary. If they decide to be aggressive, acquiring Sneed would be a worthwhile defensive move.
