The New England Patriots are generally anticipated to be sellers at the NFL trade deadline, a stance they’ve already signaled by trading edge rusher Josh Uche.
However, Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo offered a slightly different take on the team’s approach.
“As an organization, we’re always looking to improve, whether that’s bringing in new players or through addition by subtraction,” Mayo explained, via Brian Hines of Pats Pulpit. “We have to consider both the short term and the long term.” Essentially, New England is making moves to best position itself for future success.
Let’s be real: the Patriots aren’t contending this year. Sitting at 2-6 after finally ending a six-game skid, they’re focusing on 2025 and beyond, though this might involve shrewd acquisitions in the meantime.
“We’re in the business of bringing in quality players and retaining the good ones we have,” Mayo added. “Culture is important, and we need players who contribute to that.”
The Patriots have plenty of gaps across the roster, from wide receiver to offensive line to defensive support. Ideally, New England wouldn’t need to sacrifice draft capital to fill these spots, but sometimes you have to do what’s necessary. One key priority should be equipping quarterback Drake Maye with reliable weapons, even if that means making some strategic trades ahead of free agency to support him.
New England has until Nov. 5 to finalize its moves.
