Brown’s Head coach reveals sudden change in starting QB for Sunday’s game vs. Ravens
The Cleveland Browns have chosen Jameis Winston as their starting quarterback for Sunday’s home game against the Baltimore Ravens, a crucial matchup against a division rival.
This decision comes after the team lost both of its other quarterbacks to injuries during a Week 7 defeat to the Cincinnati Bengals. Starter Deshaun Watson suffered an Achilles injury that will keep him out for the rest of the season, and Dorian Thompson-Robinson hurt his throwing hand. Winston stepped in after Thompson-Robinson’s injury and successfully led the team on a touchdown drive in their final series.
Head coach Kevin Stefanski had initially indicated he would wait for an update on Thompson-Robinson’s status before making a quarterback decision, but it appears Winston will now lead the struggling franchise.
Currently, the Browns sit at 1-6 and have not scored more than 18 points in any game this season. With a third-down conversion rate of just 23.7%, they are looking to the former No. 1 overall pick from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to boost their offensive production. So far, Cleveland has managed only six touchdown passes this season. In his nine-plus seasons in the NFL, Winston has thrown for 22,187 yards and 142 touchdowns, but he also has 99 interceptions and has been sacked 196 times.
If Winston can limit turnovers and receive adequate protection in the pocket, he could provide the Browns with more scoring opportunities. There’s potential for improvement, especially if he can mirror his performance in New Orleans, where he threw 14 touchdown passes and just three interceptions in limited action during the 2021 season.
Cleveland is in dire need of a spark for its underwhelming offense, particularly after trading their top receiver, Amari Cooper, to the Buffalo Bills last week.
