Deshaun Watson exited today’s game with what is believed to be a season-ending injury. Following the incident, Myles Garrett publicly defended his teammate, particularly in response to the reaction at Huntington Bank Field.
Speaking after the Browns’ 21-14 loss, Garrett addressed the criticism Watson has faced since the injury, including boos from Cleveland fans. During the press conference, Garrett expressed his disapproval, saying Watson doesn’t deserve the harsh treatment. “I hate using the word deserves, but he hasn’t earned that. He’s been a model citizen through college and most of the pros. He plays with maximum effort, giving his all, and even risking his body,” said Garrett.
Watson’s reputation has shifted in recent years, partly due to scandals and his performance. However, Garrett emphasized that Watson’s Achilles injury is just the latest challenge he has faced.
“I’ve seen him work tirelessly to get back and keep a positive attitude, despite everything outside the facility. He’s faced death threats, people showing up at his house, and attacks on his family. No one deserves that,” Garrett added.
Before the injury, Watson was playing one of his best games this season, completing 15 of 17 passes for 128 yards against the Cincinnati Bengals. After his exit, Dorian Thompson-Robinson and Jameis Winston stepped in.
Though unconfirmed, this injury could end Watson’s third season in Cleveland, where the team sits at 1-6. Watson has completed 63.4% of his passes for 1,148 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions. Despite the mixed opinions about Watson, Garrett emphasized the need for the team and organization to stand by him.
“There’s always a risk of injury, and Watson took that risk. As a team and an organization, we need to support him, no matter his mistakes on or off the field. None of us have the moral high ground to judge him,” Garrett concluded.
