Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery has become a key focus for the organization in terms of long-term commitment.
It’s rare for player contract extensions to be announced just a day before a significant nationally televised road game.
In the match against the Dallas Cowboys, the 27-year-old showcased once again why hardworking, determined players who push for extra yards and break tackles earn the respect of Detroit’s management.
“David, this was the right move for us. He’s performing at a high level, and we want him here for the long haul. We just wanted to make it happen,” said Dan Campbell after the Lions’ 47-9 victory over the Cowboys. “We’re fortunate that both parties were aligned. Credit goes to Brad Holmes for making it happen.”
“We couldn’t imagine not having ‘5’ with us in a year or two,” Campbell added. “It just didn’t make sense. He embodies our culture and is exactly what we’re looking for. We’re not going to let a player like that go, so I’m glad he’s here to stay.” This further highlighted the camaraderie Montgomery has built with his teammates.
The running backs unit is known for its strong bond, with each player contributing their own unique personality both in practice and during games.
Quarterback Jared Goff shared after the game that Montgomery is one of his favorite teammates.
“He means a lot to us. He’s a special player and an exceptional teammate—definitely one of my all-time favorites. I’ve told him that,” Goff said. “He always makes me laugh. I’m thrilled for him with the extension. He’s playing at an incredibly high level right now. If you look at running backs around the league, I don’t know if you can find one playing better. It’s great having him on our team, and with Gibbs, it feels like we have two of the top backs—maybe even three. Our stable is solid.”
