Are the Green Bay Packers currently a legitimate Super Bowl contender?
The answer seems uncertain. After winning their last two games, the Packers have positioned themselves as competitive players in the NFC playoff race. However, they still lack a marquee victory this season, having lost two matchups against top NFC opponents.
With limited options for roster adjustments this season, aside from the upcoming trade deadline, the team’s performance in the remaining games will significantly influence their decisions for future roster changes.
A key area of concern for the Packers is their interior offensive line, especially at center. Fourth-year starter Josh Myers has not shown the level of play that warrants a long-term contract, potentially prompting Green Bay to make a major move at that position this spring.
Bleacher Report’s NFL Scouting Department identified center as the Packers’ “biggest weakness” and predicted they might pursue four-time Pro Bowler Ryan Kelly from the Indianapolis Colts in free agency.
“Josh Myers has struggled this season, and with his contract nearing expiration, it’s unlikely he will remain the starting center in Green Bay next year,” the report noted.
“Meanwhile, Kelly is set to hit the open market and is still performing well. Although he missed Weeks 4 and 5 due to injury, the nine-year veteran had allowed just three pressures and earned a solid 68.2 run-blocking grade from Pro Football Focus in the Colts’ first three games.”
At 31, Kelly may not have a long tenure in Green Bay if he signs there, but he demonstrated Pro Bowl-level performance in 2023 and would significantly enhance the Packers’ offensive line in the short term.
If the Packers’ goal is to secure a championship during Jordan Love’s extension, finding him an ideal center should be a priority. Kelly could be the best available option at the position this spring, making it a logical pursuit for Green Bay.
