A former Cleveland Browns player believes the franchise is failing its players by sticking with quarterback Deshaun Watson after another poor performance.
Mitchell Schwartz, who played for the Browns from 2012 to 2015, criticized the organization after head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed Watson would remain the starting quarterback heading into Week 7. Schwartz argued it’s unfair to the team, especially to veteran players who are pushing through painful injuries, to not bench Watson and give the team a better chance to win.
“It’s incredibly sh–ty to do this to the rest of the team,” Schwartz wrote on X. He mentioned players like Joel Bitonio and Myles Garrett, who are battling injuries each week, only to see their efforts undermined by Watson’s poor performance. In Sunday’s 20-16 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Watson threw for just 168 yards, with the team’s only touchdown coming from a blocked field-goal return. Numerous statistics highlight Watson’s ineffectiveness, and the offense shows no signs of improvement.
Despite this, the Browns remain firm in their decision not to bench Watson. It seems no one within the organization is ready to face the reality that the quarterback and his contract have been disastrous for the team.
