ESPN has pointed out a potential trade target: Indianapolis Colts linebacker E.J. Speed. Dan Graziano noted, “They just placed Ja’Whaun Bentley on injured reserve (torn pec), so this move makes sense. The Bills and Raiders are also possibilities.”
Speed could be a strong addition to the Patriots. He has demonstrated considerable talent with the Colts and would seamlessly step in as a starter and vital contributor to the defense.
In the 2024 NFL season, Speed has accumulated 22 total tackles over two games, though he has yet to record other notable statistics.
In 2023, Speed had the best season of his career, totaling 102 tackles, one sack, three forced fumbles, and four passes defended.
These figures highlight Speed’s potential impact. At 29, he could be a valuable asset for the Patriots beyond the 2024 season. However, he is set to enter free agency after this year, so New England might aim to secure an extension if they acquire him, or they could choose to move on if things don’t pan out.
