Head coach Matt LaFLeur Officially Confirms Latest Update on Jordan Love’s Status Ahead of Game vs Colts. Says Jordan Love is likely to be out.
The Green Bay Packers have promoted quarterback Sean Clifford from the practice squad for Sunday’s game.
This is a routine move, meaning Clifford will be available to play against the Indianapolis Colts but will return to the practice squad on Monday. Bill Huber first reported this development.
Jordan Love, the starting quarterback, was initially listed as questionable due to an MCL injury sustained last week in Brazil, but his status has since been downgraded to doubtful, making his participation highly unlikely.
If Love is cleared to play on Sunday, the Packers might still choose to keep Clifford inactive despite his elevation to the active roster. Clifford’s elevation ensures he will earn the minimum salary for active roster players, a significant increase from his practice squad salary.
Head coach Matt LaFleur has confirmed that Malik Willis will start if Jordan Love cannot play. Clifford did, however, get some practice reps with the first team this week.
This is Clifford’s first elevation this season, leaving him with two more potential elevations.

Sean Clifford was drafted by the Packers in the fifth round last year and spent his rookie season as Jordan Love’s backup. This year, he competed for the backup role with seventh-round rookie Michael Pratt, but neither player impressed sufficiently. The Packers traded a 2025 seventh-round pick to the Tennessee Titans to acquire Malik Willis.
Clifford was reinstated to the practice squad as QB3, while Pratt, now with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ practice squad, was released.
The final decision on Jordan Love’s status will be made 90 minutes before the game, at 10:30 a.m. CT on Sunday.
The game against the Indianapolis Colts marks the Packers’ regular season home opener.
