The New York Jets’ 2024 season opener did not go as anticipated, resulting in a defeat against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football.
Although the Jets were underdogs by more than a field goal, they aimed to keep the game competitive against a team widely viewed as a Super Bowl contender.
The most notable issue was the unexpected underperformance of the Jets’ defense, which allowed 32 points and struggled against San Francisco’s offensive line.
The defense failed to contain the run game and lacked consistent pressure on 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, which was a major concern for a unit expected to excel in these areas. The absence of edge rusher Haason Reddick was particularly evident in this loss.
Reddick’s ongoing contract dispute has become a significant distraction, with him accumulating about $1 million in fines. His decision to skip the opener suggests he is standing firm in the negotiations.
Given his prior trade request and the current situation, it seems the Jets might need to consider trading Reddick. Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report has highlighted Reddick as a potential trade target, with the Detroit Lions being a likely destination. The Lions have the financial means to meet Reddick’s contract demands and are serious contenders in the NFC.
“The Lions could benefit from adding a high-caliber player alongside Aidan Hutchinson. Although Detroit’s defense performed well against the Los Angeles Rams, they should be open to acquiring more impactful players as their Super Bowl window opens.”
A trade to Detroit could benefit both parties, as Reddick and Hutchinson would create a strong defensive duo, enhancing the Lions’ pass rush.
For the Jets, dealing with Reddick’s situation is becoming increasingly problematic. Player contract disputes are rare and typically negative for team morale. Thus, it might be in the Jets’ best interest to trade Reddick to alleviate the distraction
and gain value.
