The Cleveland Browns offense struggled significantly in their Week 1 opener against the Dallas Cowboys.
However, tight end David Njoku was a rare bright spot, catching five of four targets for 44 yards. His fourth reception, a 29-yard gain, moved the ball to the Dallas 27-yard line and helped set up Cleveland’s first touchdown, scored by Jerry Jeudy from a pass by Deshaun Watson.
Unfortunately, Njoku’s day ended there after taking a hard hit and landing awkwardly.
He was immediately taken to the medical tent, and while it initially appeared to be a head injury, it now seems to be his ankle that is the main concern.
Njoku was seen being assisted to the locker room and was unable to bear weight on his leg, which is a worrying sign and leaves the Browns with just Jordan Akins as their only active tight end.
The team also has Blake Whiteheart and Cameron Latu on the practice squad, and they might be called up if Njoku faces a lengthy absence.
Regardless of who fills in, it will be a downgrade. Njoku had a standout season in 2023, with 882 yards and six touchdowns on 81 receptions, making him a top-10 tight end whose absence will be hard to replace.
