In the NFL offseason, quarterback Mac Jones was traded by the New England Patriots to the Jacksonville Jaguars, ending their relationship. The two parties’ unsatisfactory tenure came to an unpleasant conclusion.
Jones appeared to be Tom Brady’s heir apparent at one point. Although he had moments when he seemed like a quarterback worthy of a team, he was never reliable.
Jones ended up playing in 11 games for the Patriots in the 2023 NFL season. He completed 2,120 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions on 64.9 percent of his throw attempts.His numbers were obviously not going in the correct direction. With 42 games played and 66.1 percent of his passes completed for 8,918 yards, 46 touchdowns, and 36 interceptions, he concluded his three-year stay with New England. Although Jones wasn’t a horrible player, it was obvious that he wasn’t the team’s long-term solution.
Jones received another trade prediction after the Jaguars’ first preseason.
According to Bleacher Report, Jones will be dealt once again before the trade deadline.
“The 2023 campaign demonstrated the importance of having a strong backup quarterback. A number of the top players in the league missed extended stints of action. Good backup players managed to hang on and even win a couple of games. Those who didn’t learned the hard way how important a reliable backup quarterback can be to a game. That’s why if a quarterback injury occurs during the season on the proper team, Mac Jones might become a coveted commodity in trade.”
There is no doubting Jones’ talent and promise, even though his tenure with the Patriots did not turn out as expected.
He has every chance to return to the starting quarterback position if he can put everything together. A change of scenery was just what New England needed. This does not prove that Jones lacks the skill to compete in the NFL.
Notwithstanding all of that, it will be intriguing to observe what lies ahead for Jones. Although he still has plenty of time to turn his career around, unless Trevor Lawrence gets hurt, he won’t be able to get a starting position in Jacksonville.
