Drake Maye addresses Jerod Mayo’s decision for Patriots to start Jacoby Brissett

Rookie quarterback Drake Maye is not thrilled about not starting for the New England Patriots in Week 1. Nevertheless, he handled head coach Jerod Mayo’s decision to start Jacoby Brissett with maturity, acknowledging his own competitive nature but understanding the situation.

As reported by Khari Thompson of Boston.com, Maye “did not seem disappointed by the decision,” even though he expressed a desire to play. “I wouldn’t say disappointed; of course, I want to play,” Maye said. “That’s my competitive side. But I get it—Jacoby has been with the first team throughout camp. I’m not disappointed, but I do want to be out there.”

Maye, despite his disappointment, plans to support Brissett and maintain a positive atmosphere in the quarterback room. “I’m still one play away, so I need to be ready for anything,” Maye added. “I’m here to support Jacoby and keep the vibe positive because nothing changes for me. I’m still cheering for him.”

During the 2024 preseason, Maye outperformed Brissett, who had limited playtime, as well as Bailey Zappe and Joe Milton. Maye completed 21 of 34 passes for 192 yards and a touchdown, plus 32 rushing yards and another touchdown. Brissett, on the other hand, threw 14 passes, completing just 5 for 36 yards and an interception.

The major question for Mayo and the Patriots is how long they will stick with Brissett if the season begins poorly. With three of the first four games on the road against strong teams, it’s possible Maye could be called upon if Brissett falters and the team struggles. Maye’s chance to play may come sooner rather than later this season.
