New England Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett will switch from No. 14 to No. 7, as announced by the team and confirmed by his practice presence.
Brissett originally wore No. 7 with the Patriots as a third-round draft pick in 2016 and kept it during his time with the Colts. He switched to No. 14 with the Dolphins and later returned to No. 7 with the Browns in 2022.
He wore No. 12 with the Commanders last year. Upon rejoining the Patriots as a free agent, Brissett had the choice to return to No. 7 after JuJu Smith-Schuster, who had it, was released.
Maye has consistently impressed during training camp and preseason, with strong performances against the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders. Coach Mayo has noted that Maye is “outplaying” his veteran counterpart.
Despite the praise, Brissett is likely to be named the Week One starter due to his considerable league experience, a quality the New England staff seems to prioritize. Although Maye has shown significant progress, the initial plan might still favor Brissett.
Jerod Mayo is set to make a significant announcement tomorrow at 8:30 AM ET, as he has scheduled a press conference that was only recently arranged. This follows his comments on the Patriots’ QB1 decision during Wednesday’s press briefing, where he mentioned that the announcement would be made to players and staff on the same day.
Currently, the Patriots are the only NFL team without a named starting quarterback, unlike the Pittsburgh Steelers, who confirmed Russell Wilson as their starter earlier on Wednesday. New England will soon reveal their choice between Jacoby Brissett and Drake Maye.
