The New England Patriots and head coach Jerod Mayo are on the verge of making a significant decision, with a key announcement expected soon. Doug Kyed of The Boston Herald reports that Mayo has scheduled an unscheduled press conference for Thursday morning. This follows Mayo’s comments about the Patriots’ quarterback situation during Wednesday’s press conference, where he mentioned that the decision would be revealed to the players and staff on the same day.
Currently, the Patriots are the only NFL team without a starting quarterback named, while the Pittsburgh Steelers have already selected Russell Wilson. The Patriots are expected to announce their choice between Jacoby Brissett and Drake Maye. Maye has impressed during training camp and preseason with strong performances against the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders and has reportedly outperformed his veteran counterpart according to Coach Mayo.
Despite Maye’s strong showing, Brissett might be named the Week One starter due to his extensive NFL experience, which the Patriots’ staff values. Brissett has been considered the potential QB1 since training camp, and although Maye has made notable progress, the initial plan might still be in play.
Jerod Mayo will address the media on Thursday at 8:30 AM ET with what is expected to be a major update. Additionally, Brissett will no longer wear No. 14, as announced by the team on Wednesday.
He has switched to No. 7, a number he wore earlier in his career with the Patriots, the Indianapolis Colts, and previously with the Cleveland Browns. This number became available after JuJu Smith-Schuster was released.
