‘He’s done a great job but he must’…Jerod Mayo on Drake Maye’s growth explaining…

As Jerod Mayo starts his tenure leading the New England Patriots, he selected his quarterback of the future in the 2024 NFL Draft, choosing former North Carolina star Drake Maye.

Now, it’s up to Maye to meet the high expectations placed on him in New England. He’s aware of the fate of previous first-round picks who failed to succeed as the Patriots’ quarterback, like Mac Jones, who is now the backup to Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville.

Maye aspires to follow in Tom Brady’s footsteps rather than Mac Jones’s, a clear choice for the former Tar Heels star. As the Patriots concluded minicamp, Mayo shared some insights into Maye’s adjustment to the professional level and his current status with the team.

As Jerod Mayo begins his tenure leading the New England Patriots, he chose former North Carolina star Drake Maye as the team’s quarterback of the future in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Now, Maye must rise to the high expectations set for him in New England. He is well aware of the fate of previous first-round picks who didn’t succeed as the Patriots’ quarterback, such as Mac Jones, who now serves as Trevor Lawrence’s backup in Jacksonville.

Maye aims to emulate Tom Brady rather than Mac Jones, a natural choice for the former Tar Heels standout. As the Patriots wrapped up minicamp, Mayo offered insights into Maye’s transition to the professional level and his current standing with the team.

Instead, it’s the Patriots who ended up with Drake Maye, and now they’ll be looking to keep him in New England for a long time. We’ll see if he can develop his talent and become the same skilled, winning quarterback that everyone admired at North Carolina, but now in the NFL.

Drake Maye describes his experience learning from Tom Brady. As he gets accustomed to the NFL, Drake Maye is benefiting from the wisdom of a Patriots legend, spending some time with Tom Brady as he begins his career in New England.

As the third-overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Drake Maye faces immense expectations. Although Tom Brady didn’t enter the NFL with such high expectations, he certainly developed them throughout his career.

In a media session, Maye shared his experience learning from Brady during their meeting earlier in May. He discussed what the legendary No. 12 for the Patriots has taught him so far.

“It was awesome,” Maye said about spending time with Brady. “Getting a chance to be around Tom, seeing how he’s wired — he’s wired different.

“He’s the GOAT, so just getting a chance to hear some wisdom from him was an awesome experience. I look forward to hopefully asking him some more questions.”

If there’s one person Maye can rely on as he develops as an NFL quarterback, Brady is an invaluable source of information. While no one expects the former North Carolina quarterback to become the next TB12, by leveraging the resources available to him, Maye has the potential to develop into a top-tier quarterback.

Time will tell, and it’s going to take some patience, but New England is excited about Drake Maye. The Patriots are hopeful he can have a tenure as lengthy and successful as Tom Brady’s with the franchise.
