According to the team’s official website, matt baker has been hired as an offensive assistant, giving them two staff members with the pittsburgh steelers for the 2024 season. Baker, 40, comes to the steelers from atlanta from atlanta, where he was on the staff of new steelers offensive coordinator arthur smith. Baker started as a special teams assistant in atlanta, but will now shift back to the offensive side of the ball in pittsburgh, where he has a background. Baker, an east lansing, michigan native, was a quarterback for north carolina from 2002-05, leading the acc in passing his senior year. From 2006-09, he spent four seasons in the nfl, bouncing around between the houston texans, dallas cowboys, new orleans saints, arizona cardinals, miami dolphins, and buffalo bills’ off-season rosters.
Baker began coaching at ole miss in 2010 as a graduate assistant, and then spent a long time playing football outside of football, focusing on energy related fields. He returned to coaching in 2019 as an offensive analyst and quarterbacks coach at western michigan, where he was promoted to quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator at division iii john carroll university. Jcu is a true football coaching and executive academy, with alumni such as nfl gms tom telesco and nick caserio, and steelers quarterbacks coach tom arth, who was offensive coordinator and head coach for the blue streaks from 2010-16.
Baker spent three years with john carroll before being signed by smith for his one season with the falcons. It’s unclear exactly what baker will do for the steelers, but it will most likely involve the development of the team’s quarterbacks. Baker becomes the second professional quarterback on the coaching staff, joining arth after the team had no quarterback in 2023. Mateo kambui, a former falcons assistant, has been hired by the steelers as an offensive assistant.
