According to the team’s website, former quarterbacks coach mike sullivan has found his new role in the pittsburgh steelers, as he has been reassigned as senior offensive assistant. Before being reassigned, sullivan had been the team’s quarterbacks coach since 2021. Since offensive coordinator matt canada was fired mid-year, he had been the team’s primary offensive play-called until the end of the 2023 season. When the steelers hired former los angeles chargers passing game coach tom arth for the position earlier this season, sullivan lost his position as quarterbacks coach.
Sullivan was selected for two offensive coordinator positions with the las vegas raiders and new orleans saints by sullivan. He had a second interview with the raiders, but luke getsy, the former chicago bears offensive coordinator and munhall native, ultimately lost out on the job. Even after arth was drafted, it had been speculated that sullivan was likely staying with the steelers, but not what role he might have. The steelers have never had a coach with the title of senior offensive assistant before, but it matches teryl austin and brian flores’ senior defensive assistant position from 2020-22.
If the offensive version of the trophy carries the same weight, sullivan will be sandwiched between offensive coordinator arthur smith and the team’s five offensive position coaches. Sullivan has had two seasons as an nfl offensive coordinator, with the tampa bay buccaneers from 2012-12 and the new york giants from 2016-17. He spent the most of his nfl career with the giants, winning two super bowls with the giants. In 2017, the giants fired him. Sullivan then spent one season as the denver broncos quarterbacks coach, one season out of football, and one season as the recruiting coordinator at his alma mater army west point before being hired by the steelers in 2021.
