The new england patriots are entering a new era, and first-year head coach jerod mayo is expected to fill as many coaching roles as possible. Espn’s mike reiss said that the team is set to select its coaching staff this week and that “one of the main themes is likely to be quantity.” The patriots “traditionally had one of the nfl’s smaller staffs,” as the team was run under former head coach bill belichick. “mayo is projected to have a significantly larger staff, which is in part due to the ability to integrate ideas and perspectives from others’ classrooms, and is also perhaps a nod to how rare belichick was in terms of having the ability to tackle so many responsibilities himself,” reiss wrote.
Belichick was the patriots’ head coach for 24 seasons, tying for a franchise record of 266-121 and guiding the team to nine super bowl appearances and six championships. He also served as the general manager for the entirety of his career, and he went on to play several seasons without official coordinators on the coaching staff. Since losing him, the patriots re-hired mayo as their next head coach, and he brings a much different lineup.
He was the team’s inside linebackers coach from 2019-2023, but he has no prior coaching experience. Nevertheless. During his nfl career, he was a patriots captain, and patriots owner robert kraft believes that “coaching was always his destiny.” This helped him get the job, and it seems that he is trying to get as much help as he can in order to steer the patriots back in the right direction after a disappointing 4-13 record in 2023.
