The new england patriots have had a busy offseason already, when they have traded out bill belichick and the bulk of their coaching staff to begin a new model, with first-year head coach jerod mayo leading the way. Bill o’brien, the offensive coordinator for ohio state who accepted the offensive coordinator position before becoming boston college’s new head coach, was one such guy from belichick’s staff in 2023 who didn’t stick around. Since his first season with the patriots was short-lived and less fruitful, o’brien returned to the team in 2023, but mayo gave him the opportunity to remain on the team’s offensive staff if he so desired.
Mayo declined, though, saying that it would be crucial for the first-year head coach to develop his own staff. Bill o’brien has had a lot of interest since the end of the patriots season, but he left it to jerod mayo to carve his own path in his first season as head coach. He could have kept o’brien as his offensive coordinator, but the new eagles football head coach knows how important it is to make these kinds of decisions for yourself rather than have them made for you in a sense. It took a while for mayo to find out that former cleveland browns offensive coordinator alex van pelt would come in and replace o’brien.
Both o’brien and mayo will be aiming to make a difference in their new clubs, but it was also interesting to hear the former patriots offensive coordinator talk about his decision to end his second season in new england.
