After one season, bill O’Brien’s second stint with the patriots ended. Since initially pledging to be the buckeyes’ offensive coordinator, the pats’ 2023 offensive coordinator has since signed to ohio state and boston college, becoming the acc program’s head coach. With o’brien expected to replace Jeff hafley as boston college’s Hc, he did not do so after being booted from the patriots.
The veteran coach said he was given the opportunity to stay on under jerod mayo. While a number of bill belichick assistants are still active, including brian belichick, o’brien is now back in the college ranks. “i definitely had an opportunity to stay,” O’Brien said, according to weei.com’s mike kadlick. “i thought it was really important for coach mayo to recruit his own staff,” he said. I came to work for bill belichick and think it’s really important for jerod to be able to hire his own staff.
The krafts were awesome about it, and i’m so proud of them. And i was incredibly lucky that ryan day offered me a job, so i made the decision.robert kraft was a key player in bringing o’brien back to foxborough. Belichick is believed to be able to keep matt patricia as the patriots’ de facto oc, according to a rumor. O’brien, the pats’ oc in 2011, brought a wealth of experience on the offensive side, completing a multi-year play-calling career with the team. Patricia came to philadelphia as a result of this. On jan. 18, o’brien committed to ohio state. Hafley was hired by the packers on jan. 31.
Days later, o’brien returned to boston to work as an oc; according to a january report, the pats were not planning to run it back with o’brien as oc; he would have to compete for the position as part of a search. O’brien’s name was taken out of consideration early on. After a deep search, the patriots discovered alex van pelt, an ex-browns oc who has had one season of play-calling experience. Van pelt, on the other hand, is a new face in a building that is still full of belichick assistants.
According to ben volin of the boston globe, mayo’s only employment with the patriots sparked questions about his ability to fill out a staff.
This helps explain why eliot wolf, the team’s new front office manager, was involved in coaching searches and why a few ex-packers assistants are among mayo’s first staff members. During this recruiting cycle, wolf was a regular participant in coaching interviews. From 2012-17, he and van pelt were packers staffers. Ben mcadoo is a former packers assistant who now works with the patriots. Van pelt, the former giants quarterback, worked together in green bay from 2012-13, with mcadoo as QB coach and van pelt as running backs coach.
Van pelt, a longtime nfl backup QB, shifted over to become aaron rodgers’ position coach after the giants hired mcadoo as their oc in 2014. Although mcadoo will now work for van pelt, volin says he still holds the position of senior offensive assistant. Per volin, dont’a hightower will coach the team’s outside backers. The ilbs are being managed by drew wilkins. Hightower will have a smoother transition into the coaching ranks as a result of this. The imposing patriot hasn’t previously held a full-time coaching position.
According to doug kyed of the boston herald, the pats are also recruiting taylor embree as their running backs coach. Embree, 35, has spent the past three years coaching the jets’ running backs. The team fired former mike lafleur earlier this season. Taylor, the son of dolphins te/ex-colorado hc jon embree, was a lower-level staffer in san francisco before joining the dolphins. The jets gig was the 35-year-old assistant’s first position coach role in the NFL.
According to espn.com, patriots tight ends coach will lawing is on track to follow o’brien to boston college. This isn’t surprising because lawing has worked with o’brien for more than ten years. O’brien travelled to penn state, the texans, alabama, and then the patriots as a coach.
