Huge Blow for Patriots as Details Regarding Sudden Depature from Team
On thursday, Bill O’Brien was named as the next head coach of the boston college football team.
According to a story published by mike kadlick of weei.com, the former new england patriots offensive coordinator had an offer to return to the nfl team but instead chose to pursue a college head-coaching position with the eagles. “i definitely had an opportunity to stay (with the patriots,” o’brien said. “i thought it was really important for (patriots head coach jerod mayo) to recruit his own staff,” he said.
I came to work for bill belichick and think it’s really important for jerod to be able to hire his own staff. The krafts were awesome about it, and i’m so proud of them. And i was ecstatic when ryan day offered me a job, so i made the call. In january, patriots owner robert kraft appointed former all-pro linebacker-turned inside linebackers coach jerod mayo to replace bill belichick at the helm, and he began to fill out his coaching staff.
Both of belichick’s sons (brian and steve) had offered to return to the team in their respective capacities as safeties coach and defensive assistant/linebackers coach, as soon as it was announced.
Brian belichick was retained, but his brother accepted the position of defensive coordinator at the university of washington in early february. Dont’a hightower, a former patriots longtime pro bowl linebacker, will be one of mayo’s newcomers to the team in 2024. Mayo’s old position as inside linebackers coach will be filled by the 33-year-old.
