In a scene from the forthcoming 10-part apple tv+ documentary series “the dynasty,” quarterback tom brady “wasn’t going to sign another deal” with the new england patriots after the 2019 season because brady “wasn’t going to sign up for more” working with then-head coach bill belichick.
The series is based on author jeff benedict’s book “the dynasty.” Benedict described patriots owner robert kraft as a “marriage counselor” who will keep brady and belichick together for a 20-year run on the “eye on foxborough” podcast, as shared by karen guregian of masslive. “tom misses the entire 2008 season with an acl and mcl tear in his left knee,” benedict said. “guys don’t usually recover from that injury, especially at his age.”
There were all sorts of reports out there. You can look back at Joe Montana, Brett Favre, Steve young, Dan Marino, John Elway, and all those guys as their careers began to fade. And tom was approaching that. And they’d already won three games and had a near-perfect season. It should have ended there. from february 2002 to february 2005, new england was crowned super bowl champions, and the 2007 patriots won super bowl xlii with an 18-0 record before losing to the new york giants, 17-14.
Although brady and belichick failed to hoist the vince lombardi trophy for the fourth time until february 2015, the team eventually won two more titles after super bowl xlix, when brady left the patriots as a 42-year-old six-time champion. “the role of the owner is really crucial,” benedict said about kraft. “the owner’s job is the one thing that separates this dynasty from the (green bay packers) of the 60s, the (pittsburgh steelers) of the 70s, and the (san francisco 49ers) of the 80s and 90s,” the owner explains. Because they have a partner who knows how to keep them together, tom and bill win three more super bowls together.
Kraft regrets not doing more to persuade brady and Belichick to work it out about four years ago, and Belichick left after new england missed the playoffs for the third time following brady’s departure last month. On apple tv+, the “the dynasty” series premieres worldwide.
