Unfortunately for New England, none of the valuable assets at the position are expected to hit the open market.According to Paul Denner Jr., “every expectation” for The Atheltic this offseason is for the Cincinnati Bengals to franchise wide receiver Tee Higgins. The projected franchise value of the position projects in 2024 to be just over $20 million.
Higgins could be one of the best free agents to suit up for the Patriots this offseason. In addition to his performances over the past four seasons, he has rushed for more than 3,600 yards and 24 touchdowns. The 6-foot-4, 219-pound Higgins is the “X” receiver New England’s offense is missing. . Moreover, as he will soon turn 25, he is about to enter the prime of life. It’s no surprise that the Bengals, who remain in a Super Bowl window, are trying to keep their talented receivers. But the franchise tag doesn’t mean the Patriots’ window of opportunity to try to acquire Higgins is completely closed.
If the Bengals can’t reach a long-term deal with the receiver (something Dehner noted the two sides were unable to come to an agreement on last season), they could tag Higgins to offset the asset and then change it.Dehner points out that potential paths could take him to free agency between March 5 and March 10, and that Higgins’ potential value could include a first- or second-round pick and an additional Day 3 pick. The Patriots currently hold the no. 34 in the NFL draft and have the opportunity to sign their own long-term contract.
Higgins could also play out the season on the franchise tag and hit the open market next year for the Patriots to join. In addition to Higgins, Tampa Bay’s Mike Evans and Michael Pittman Jr. were drafted. Indianapolis and Jacksonville’s Calvin Ridley will be the cheapest free agent wide receiver on the open market.
