Even before the trade deadline, the boston celtics have consistently been the best team in the nba this season.
The celtics had a great trade deadline, bringing in extra big man depth in xavier tillman and also signing a young prospect in jaden springer. With the buyout market season now underway, the celtics would be wise to target danilo gallinari and/or thaddeus young.
The celtics don’t need any more depth, but it will help them prepare for what they expect to be a long playoff run. They have a vacant roster spot and could use it to convert someone like neemias queta, who is on a two-year contract, to a new one. They should also ask for additional veteran assistance.
Danilo Gallinari should be the first priority for the Celtics on the buyout market
Gallinari is unquestionably the best buyout offer on the market. He was traded to the detroit pistons and only played a handful of games for them before being cut. Gallinari is a combo forward who can slide in and act as the backup small forward.
Sam hauser is currently in charge of this position, but Gallinari will give the celtics more of a veteran option.
Gallinari made his return to football this season after suffering an ACL injury for the rest of the season.
Prior to that, he had been averaging double figures with the atlanta hawks. Though his numbers were down scoring, he was still shooting well in the pistons’ small sample size this season.
He shot 54.5 percent from the field and 58.3 percent from three-point range in six games.gallinari is expected to attract attention from a few clubs, so the celtics will have some competition. But a key role on a championship caliber team might be enough to lure him to the team.
Thaddeus Young could be the Celtics backup plan on the buyout market
If the celtics do not sign danilo gallinari, they could turn their attention to thaddeus young. Young is also a bit of a combo forward, but in recent seasons he hasn’t been as effective as Gallinari.
He has been more of a veteran mentor on the toronto raptors in recent years. His presence on the celtics would be a locker room type of guy, but it’s never a bad idea to have a few of those guys on a team that is trying to win a championship. Young has appeared in 23 games for the raptors this season, including six starts. Young averaged 5.0 points per game, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.2 assists, with splits of 62.1 percent from the field and 41.7 percent from the free throw line. If they miss out on gallinari, then rolling with what they have should be enough.
There’s also talk of them converting neemias queta to a standard contract, and that’s probably the right move. The celtics have enough players on their current roster to win a championship. Gallinari could give them that extra push. Young isn’t necessarily a good fall back option, but he isn’t necessarily a priority. Gallinari should be the team’s top priority on the buyout market, but it would be a bad idea if they lose out on him.
