Despite the fact that the patriots recruited from within to replace both bill Belichick positions, they may be taking a different approach to business, at least when it comes to player personnel.
Alonzo highsmith, who the patriots reportedly recruited from the university of miami to serve as their front office, will “help the team transition its grading system,” according to cbs sports’ jonathan jones.
Highmith’s grading system isn’t known for certain, but jones believes it could be similar to the packers’ grading scheme when he and eliot wolf were together in green bay. According to jones, the packers’ grading system valued athleticism, explosiveness, and versatility, while the patriots’ grading system under belichick was “more stringent” on determining whether players were suitable.wolf spent six seasons with the packers (2012-17), before joining the browns’ front office for two more seasons (2018-19).
Highsmith opted to work in the seahawks’ front office for three seasons before joining the university of miami in 2022, according to michael irvin, who played with him in college and with the cowboys, saying he and new patriots coach jerod mayo will “be a dangerous pairing.” Yesterday, i was talking with patriots owner robert kraft about jerod mayo — that pairing of them all is going to be crazy because they both act like they do. “zo is such a hard worker,” he says. When i first started college, alonzo highsmith was one of the guys i admired: “how do you learn how to work?” i asked him. Alonzo highsmith talked about what it takes to be a champion.

According to monday morning quarterback albert breer, wolf will replace belichick as the patriots’ chief decision-maker on player personnel. matt groh will be in charge of college scouting, while pat stewart will oversee pro scouting. Following dave ziegler’s retirement in the 2022 offseason, Groh served as the patriots’ director of player personnel, while stewart joined the team in 2023, serving in various capacities between 2007-2017. Groh was notably visible with the patriots’ staffers at the senior bowl last week, as shown in the team’s behind-the-scenes video of scouting the vent.
He also told the team’s website what he is valuing ahead of the draft.
During the week of the senior bowl, groh told patriots.com, “you need to have explosive players.” “you look at the teams that are deep into the playoffs, and they have explosive players, whether it’s on the perimeter, or in the backfield, or in the tight end position,” he said. Explosive plays are the best way to score points. You get that by having explosive players and someone who can get those guys the ball. so, it seems that highsmith and groh aren’t too far apart in terms of what they want in a player.
