Since joining the Las Vegas Raiders in the 2021 and 2022 seasons, new england patriots quarterback Mac Jones was a teammate, so meyers knows a lot about what went wrong for jones during jones’ sophomore pro campaign.
“how that went down with Mac, i kind of watched it all unfold over the past few years, and i feel like you could’ve seen it a few years ago and told it would end up bad,” meyers told NBC sports boston’s phil perry. “i don’t like singled out people, but i think they should have met him a little bit more.” I know he’s in the building. I can’t think of too many people who are better at it than him.
I hate to see it for him, but i do. after the 2021 first-round draft pick was given a pro bowl call as a rookie playing under then-offensive coordinator josh mcdaniels, former patriots head coach bill belichick failed Jones.
Jones regressed after mcdaniels’ departure during the 2022 season while working with assistants matt patricia and joe judge, and Belichick pulled him from games on four separate occasions this season.
Jones is rumored to have “a clean slate” under new head coach Jerod Mayo, but it’s widely assumed that the patriots will try to get some compensation for the quarterback’s services either before or after this year’s draft.
After McDaniels became the raiders’ head coach in early 2022, meyers said he wished the patriots did more to “help” Jones.
Meyers said, “you name it, like talent, coaching, or whatever.” “just putting him in a better position to win, i think would’ve helped their program a lot.” Mayo said last month that “there’s enough blame to go around” for jones’ transition from being a qb1 for a playoff team in january 2022 to someone who could very well be competing for a roster spot.
Although meyers and others are correct to say that jones deserved more in the last two years, it seems that the former alabama crimson tide star and the patriots must settle on a divorce sooner rather than later.
