The New England Patriots hired former New York Giants head coach Ben McAdoo as an offensive assistant under head coach Jarod Mayo and offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt.

The New England Patriots continue their revolutionary overhaul of the offense, adding veteran knowledge to new head coach Jerod Mayo’s staff. The Patriots have hired former New York Giants coach Ben McAdoo as their offensive lineman, according to NFL Network. McAdoo is expected to serve as Mayo’s assistant coach while assisting newly hired offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt.

McAdoo, who began his professional coaching career as the offensive quality control coach with the New Orleans Saints in 2004, has been the offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers since 2022. He is best known for his short but eventful tenure as head coach of the Giants since 2016. 2017. The 46-year-old led New York to an 11-5 record and a playoff appearance in his first season.

However, the team regressed sharply in Year 2, a season marred by numerous injuries and suspensions.

McAdoo also made the controversial decision to replace quarterback Eli Manning in Week 13, ending his streak of 210 consecutive starts. He was fired along with general manager Jerry Reese after posting a 2-10 record in 2017. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of New England’s interest in McAdoo stems from his time with the Green Bay Packers.

The Pennsylvania native served as tight ends coach from 2006 to 2011 and quarterbacks coach from 2012 to 2013. During that time, McAdoo worked with Van Pelt under former Packers and current Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy. He also joined a front office in which current Patriots scouting director Eliot Wolf played a key role. Wolf has been mentioned as a candidate for the Patriots general manager job after spending most of January helping with Mayo’s workout conversations and vetting process.

McAdoo’s experience working with Wolf and Van Pelt now reinforces the idea that the Patriots’ operations will have a considerably new look and process this season.

His experience combining the outside zone with gap control in the short game offense is a great fit for New England as it adapts to the West Coast style. More importantly, his extensive football knowledge should be an asset to his former Mayo teammate Van Pelt as New England tries to rebuild an offense that ranked 32nd last season.
