ESPN’s latest mock draft has Patriots taking quarterback, tackle with first two picks

Jerod Mayo and the Patriots have a lot of work to do to rebuild an uneven roster, especially on offense. While New England looks to add an impact player at the quarterback position this offseason, the Patriots have been hampered by a porous offensive line and a lack of proven players in 2023. That being said, there is no quick fix to simplify the New England offense.

At least not for the rest of the season. But in ESPN’s latest NFL mock draft, draft analyst Matt Miller addresses two key needs with the Patriots’ first two picks. Miller took LSU quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels to New England with the third overall pick, then University of Houston offensive tackle Patrick Paul in the second round (34th overall ).

Despite recent drafts that have Daniels as the top candidate ahead of UNC QB Drake Mayden, Miller could use the LSU signal-caller when New England runs out.

The Patriots could hold off on a trade or pick up a top prospect from Ohio State, and Marvin Harrison Jr. is Marvin Harrison. Miller, ranked No. 3, believes Daniels will be the most productive player in a key area of need for New England. “Daniels, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, has excellent speed and open vision as a runner and is the best deep passer in his draft class,” Miller wrote. He threw 40 touchdowns in 2023, 22 of them leading the FBS of 20 yards or more.

Daniels has been the most improved player in college football since he committed to making good plays from the pocket, and his draft stock has risen from Day 3 to today.

Paul is another attractive option for New England in the second round, especially given the uncertainty of the Patriots’ O-line this season. Pending free agent Trent Brown will likely play elsewhere after a tumultuous season in Foxboro, and right tackle Mike Onwenu is also slated for a big payday on the open market.
