The New England patriots announced their goodbyes to a member of the Belichick family for the second time in a month on january 11, and former all-pro linebacker-turned inside linebackers coach jerod mayo was hired the next day.
Patriots OLB coach Steve Belichick has now accepted the position to become the University of Washington’s defensive coordinator.
After 12 seasons coaching in the NFL with the Patriots, he heads to the college ranks in a coordinator capacity.

Two weeks ago, mayo announced that steve belichick and his brother, brian belichick, had offered to remain on the staff as defensive assistant and safeties coach, respectively. When jedd fisch was the quarterbacks coach in new england, the former joined his father’s staff in 2012 and was the team’s defensive play-caller and outside linebackers coach last season.
On jan. 14, fisch accepted a seven-year deal to serve as the huskies’ new coach, just days after former head coach kalen deboer took over at the university of Alabama.
Deboer joined the crimson tide two days after it was announced that nick saban was retiring. Belichick and fisch join a team that went 14-1 last season and lost to michigan in the national championship game in the college football playoff last season.
