Jerod Mayo has completed his hiring of a coordinator and is focused on what he will do with the Patriots front office. Running the Patriots front office seems a lot better than the offensive coordinator job.
It’s unclear whether the Patriots will hire a general manager, but their player manager job is “viewed as an attractive vacancy,” The Athletic’s Jeff Howe reported Saturday. “They will have a free rein with a new manager and owner, Robert Kraft, who is highly regarded by league executives,” Howe wrote.
As Howe said, the Patriots are starting very fresh after parting ways with Bill Belichick. The Patriots have named Jerod Mayo as their next head coach, so whoever will be in charge of running the front office will not be able to choose the head coach.
However, they possess some valuable assets. The biggest asset the Patriots have is the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, giving them the opportunity to select their next franchise quarterback. The Patriots also own one of the first four picks in each of the first six rounds of the draft, for a total of nine selections.
Having two of the top 34 picks in the draft allows the Patriots to address some of their biggest needs. The 2024 NFL Draft is considered the best linebacker and offensive tackle class.
Quarterbacks Caleb Williams, Drake Maye and Jaden Daniels are often ranked in the top five or even top three in mock drafts.The Patriots have an in-house candidate for the top front office job who can’t pick the No. 1 quarterback. 3. “If [Eliot] Wolff is running the show, I expect the Patriots to take a long, hard look at drafting a left tackle with the No. 1 pick. 3,” Howe wrote.
Wolff, who has served as the Patriots’ director of scouting since 2022, is widely seen as a front-runner to lead the Patriots’ front office after Belichick’s departure. Notre Dame’s Joe Alt and Penn State’s Olu Fashanu are considered possible picks by pundits and scouts if they eventually get the job and want to play offense. Because whoever runs the Patriots’ player personnel department is their space.
New England has nearly $70 million in cap space, so it will likely be one of the teams with the most cap space this offseason.
Mayo reached out to the potential candidates because someone could join the team’s human resources department in some capacity, Howe said, adding to the excitement about what the Patriots could do.”So the reason league sources are interested in the department manager hiring process is because they hope to get in on the action,” Howe wrote.
Mayo began formalizing its coaching staff Thursday, officially hiring three coordinators. Most notable was the hiring of former Browns assistant Alex Van Pelt as offensive coordinator. The Patriots’ hiring of Van Pelt came after they interviewed at least 11 other candidates, citing the job as “not very desirable.”
