WHO and WHY: Jeremy Springer, Patriots Hire Special Teams Coordinator…

A new coaching vacancy has been filled by the New England Patriots.

Former assistant coach Jeremy Springer will be the next special teams coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams. Springer, who is Jerod Mayo’s second for the job after taking over as head coach earlier this month, was one of three coaches considered for the role.

Additionally, he is the first coach to join New England State University this season. Team Coordinator? When I asked Kenneth Stein of SB Nation Rams affiliate Turf Show Times what he thought of Springer, he was reluctant to say outside the box what kind of impact he might or might not have had on Los Angeles’ special teams in the past. I said it’s hard. This dog.

During his time with the team, Springer participated mainly in the background. “The Rams had the worst special teams in the NFL, bar none,” he told the Pats Pulpit. “There was absolutely no information about Springer.” The idea that Sean McVay would want to let go of a special teams coach who wants the team is ironic. It’s no exaggeration to say that Springer’s NFL career has been nothing short of spectacular.

As mentioned before, in the few years with him, the Rams had the worst performance in the league in the third period of a game. Clearly, there are several factors at play here. An NFL player’s performance on and off the field can never be evaluated in a vacuum. The Patriots and Jarod Mayo were also aware of this and were initially interested in Springer. In a later interview, he reportedly asked the team to at least consider him a backup. The Patriots offered the job to fellow prospect Marquis Williams, but Williams ultimately decided to stay with the Atlanta Falcons.

Looks like Springer managed to get inside. Is Springer just a consolation prize? If the Patriots are serious about signing Williams and keeping Springer in some capacity, the answer to that question should be yes. But that and the Rams’ struggles over the last two seasons are not a reflection of his coaching ability. He had to do something in New England’s recruiting class to earn the job, but it will be difficult to determine what it was and whether it led to the team’s success under former coordinator Cam.

Harmony in the market on January 31. Going back to the original question, his hiring by the Patriots, like any other decision, seems to have a simple explanation. He was ready to join the team and presented a plan for his team that convinced New England. Team decision makers make this possible.
