The New England Patriots have a new offensive coordinator for a new era.
Former Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt will be the Patriots’ next offensive coordinator, according to a report Thursday afternoon from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Van Pelt, 53, was fired by the Browns on Jan. 17, four days after the AFC’s 45-14 loss to the Houston Texans.
During his four-year tenure in Cleveland, Van Pelt’s offense consistently ranked in the middle of the league, never finishing higher than 14 or lower than 18 in total yards.
The hire comes 20 days after New England replaced the late Bill Belichick with linebackers coach Jerod Mayo. Van Pelt played nine years in the NFL as a backup quarterback for the Buffalo Bills.
He started in NFL Europe with the Frankfurt Galaxy in 2005 and worked at Coaching Food Chain before being hired by the Browns in 2020 to replace Todd Monken.
