The New England Patriots are considering promoting current defensive line coach DeMarcus Covington to defensive coordinator, according to multiple media reports on Saturday.
This is the first greeting from the team’s new coach, Jerod Mayo, who recently took over as the successor to longtime coach Bill Belichick.
Covington, 34, joined the Patriots as an assistant in 2017 and was promoted to defensive line coach in 2020.
Bill Belichick has been primarily responsible for defensive playmaking duties in recent years, and the last person to holder of the defensive coordinator title was Matt Patricia in 2017.
