According to league sources, former new england patriots coach bill belichick is viewed as a long shot for the washington commanders and seattle seahawks coaching positions, allowing the second-winningest coach in nfl history to be without a team in 2024.
The chances of that increased on thursday when the atlanta falcons, the only team to sign belichick this offseason, signed los angeles rams defensive coordinator raheem morris. According to league sources, a change in direction is needed for the commanders or seahawks to operate properly.
The remaining six head-coaching positions have been filled this offseason. It was more or less agreed that belichick would remain with the patriots for as long as it took to replace don shula as the league’s winningest coach. After going 4-13, belichick and new england parted ways.
Last week, belichick spoke with the falcons twice. belichick has 333 coaching victories, including the regular season and playoffs. Shula now has 15 coaching victories over the baltimore colts and miami dolphins, compared to shula’s 347 games as coach. As he pursues the record, belichick’s enemy is now time.
On april 16, he will turn 72. If belichick does not coach in any capacity in 2024, it would end a streak of 49 seasons without a coaching staff in the nfl. Under head coach ted marchibroda, he began his career as a “special assistant” with the baltimore colts in 1975.
