Bill Belichick shoes will be difficult to fill for jerod mayo with the new england patriots in 2023.
It could be even harder if Belichick sons are retained. In his first year as the team’s replacement, Jerod mayo has a lot to fill.
After six super bowl victories, nine appearances, and 266 victories, there aren’t many coaches who quit with a team. Mayo isn’t exactly fit to fill those voids as he has been with the patriots organization since being drafted in the first round in 2008. However, as mayo begins to leave his mark as the storied franchise’s head coach, moving beyond the Belichick shadow should be a central concern.
So far, that seems to be the case. Espn’s mike reiss reported that Belichick sons, steve and brian, could be involved in the organization in 2024 as mayo is looking for candidates to fill out the rest of his coaching staff. Although mayo and steve have worked together on the patriots’ defense for many years, sticking with the belichick family will only hurt his chances of building a viable winner in foxboro.
After 23 years of a constant message and theme ringing through the building, new england needs fresh ideas. The offense became stale, and the defense, although excelling in critical moments, lacked talent at critical positions, and leadership concerns grew the minute tom brady left for tampa bay.
To sustain a franchise’s success, new ideas and mindsets are vital. The dallas cowboys parted ways with tom landry in 1988 and brought in jimmy johnson, a fresh mind, to usher in a new era of football for america’s squad. The cowboys won three super bowls, and it was the best thing they ever did. Now that it seems premature to compare mayo to johnson, the late 80s cowboys’ message is that fresh ideas are vital.
Since he’s still under the Belichick tree, some analysts may suspect mayo of not being a “new idea” guy, but his introductory press conference demonstrated a coach willing to adapt. It’s a warning that new england isn’t ready to step out of his shadows yet by keeping the Belichick name in foxboro and employing the old coach’s sons.
