The new england patriots will begin their hunt for a new offensive coordinator by looking at an old acquaintance.
On monday, los angeles rams tight ends coach nick caley, who worked as an assistant in new england from 2015 to 2022, will speak with his ex-team. Espn’s adam schefter was the first to share the news. caley, 40, has extensive coaching experience.
Over the next decade, he worked at various colleges, including major-name programs like auburn and arkansas, beginning his career as a student assistant at his alma mater, john carroll.
After previously serving as a secondary coach at florida atlantic, he decided to pursue the pros in 2015. Caley spent his first two years in the nfl as an offensive assistant with the patriots, and by 2017, was named the team’s tight ends coach. Caley was a six-year starter before being traded to the offensive coordinator position in los angeles in the spring of 2023, where he was re-hired by bill O’Brien, a local re-hire.
Caley was recalled to los angeles by rams head coach sean Mcvay, who coached a tight end group that caught 62 passes for 668 yards and three touchdowns. With O’Brien leaving the patriots again after a disappointing season and the team’s staff as a unit in a rebuilding process after a departure from head coach, the door could be open for caley to return.
He is the first reported candidate to interview with Jerod mayo, the current offensive coordinator. Caley is the eighth assistant coach to the patriots this offseason, having previously worked with him.
