In a thursday update about bill Belichick seemingly nearing completion as Atlanta Falcons head coach, NFL insider mike florio of pro football talk somewhat buried an interesting piece of information.
Florio said that in some league circles, both the Dallas Cowboys and philadelphia eagles expressed interest in Belichick, but that he didn’t respond, and that those teams then decided to stick with their current coaches.” Belichick had been mentioned in stories and rumors with the cowboys and eagles before both nfc east teams lost wild-card playoff defeats.
Jerry jones, the cowboys’ owner and general manager, was somewhat surprised to announce this week that he will continue with mike McCarthy, even though McCarthy has lost three of his last four playoff games with the club since the 2020 season.
McCarthy’s cowboys won 12 regular-season games in each of the previous three seasons, according to eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie.
Although Sirianni guided philadelphia to super bowl lvii, where the club lost to the kansas city chiefs in february, the 2023 edition of the eagles went from 10-1 to 11-6 before being defeated by the tampa bay buccaneers to the tune of 32-9 in this past monday’s wild-card matchup.
“although Belichick journey to atlanta isn’t over, the league is abuzz about it,” florio said. “Belichick is said to be doing with ‘big-market media,’ making him more likely to travel to a place like atlanta than dallas or philadelphia,” one league source said. since Belichick was officially available last week, outsiders may never know how serious, if at all, they were about doing business with him.
However, depending on how Dallas and Philadelphia perform next season, jones and/or lurie may have to answer questions on the subject later this year.
