The San Francisco 49ers could lose a key assistant coach from their struggling special teams. As the team fills key positions, including front office member Adam Peters and defensive coordinator Steve Wilkes, the focus is on offensive assistant Clint Kubiak, who is currently drawing interest from the Chicago Bears.
Adding to the concerns, 49ers assistant special teams coach Matt Harper recently interviewed for the vacant special teams coaching position with the New York Giants. Despite that surprising attention, the 49ers’ special teams DVOA dropped from 15th in 2022 to 25th this season thanks to a strong overall performance from rookie quarterback Jake Moody and improved play from punter Mitch Wishnowski.
Despite these challenges, the team has managed to stay focused going into 2021. If he secures a role with the Giants, the 49ers may have to address some of the gaps in his game, a glaring weakness for one of the best teams in the NFL.
