Former Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman recently defended Alexander Zinchenko, highlighting the real problems with the Gunners’ season.
The Ukraine international has been criticized for his mistakes and questionable defending in recent games.
Zinchenko was recently troubled by a poor one-on-one save against Mohamed Salah in a 1-1 draw against Liverpool (December 23). After back-to-back losses, they fell to 4th place.
In that troubling form, Seaman pointed out that Mikel Arteta’s side failed to put the ball in the back of the net despite creating plenty of chances.
Asked if the loan of left-back Kieran Tierney to Real Sociedad was a mistake, pundit Seaman said on his podcast: They are different players. Kieran Tierney gives more to the defense and Alexander Zinchenko gives more to the attack when he drops into midfield. I know we get a lot of attention, but it’s about our defense as a team.
“I hate to single out players.”Arsenal had 30 shots on target in the 2-0 defeat at West Ham United (28 December), 13 shots on target in the 2-1 defeat at Fulham (31 December) and the draw with Liverpool.
Commenting on the Gunners’ poor conversion rate, Seaman added:“If you look at the chances Arsenal created… there were a lot of chances in the Christmas game.
What does that mean, 56 hits in 3 games?’ To take that many shots and score two goals in response… that’s scoring goals.”Arteta’s side have scored the fewest Premier League goals (37) of the top five teams this season, but have also conceded the fewest goals (20) behind Liverpool (18).
