Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has predicted Liverpool will “give it their all” in the Premier League title race this season.
Shearer watched his beloved Newcastle lose 4-2 to Jurgen Klopp at Anfield on New Year’s Day.
Liverpool’s win takes them three points clear with at least 11 days remaining in the FA Cup.Shearer believes that “no doubt” Klopp’s side will either push the reigning champions all the way or lift the trophy themselves in May, comparing the title race to Arsenal’s poor holiday form and Manchester City’s recent resurgence. “They will reach their limits.” The Premier League’s top goalscorer spoke to The Rest Is Football podcast. There is no doubt.
They go to extremes. It will be on the last weekend of the season. They are a very good team.“[Virgil] van Dijk is back to his prime, Trent [Alexander-Arnold] is enjoying himself. They have a great goalkeeper and if they have the brilliance of Mo Salah, they have every chance. “They have game-changing players who can make a difference off the bench and they have a lot of options.”
Despite hopes rising for the Reds after Monday’s deserved win, captain and centre-back Van Dijk refused to comment on the title race, saying it was “too early” to discuss their issues publicly. “I’m not saying anything here. I never have and I never will.” The powerful Van Dijk confirmed. It’s too early for that. It is now the beginning of January. Some players leave and others return from injury. We’ll see what it brings.
If you’re still on top in February or March, you’ll need to make one last push to see if you can pull it off. “But for now we will only focus on the game in front of us and not look at anyone else (and try to improve). This has always been in practice and has given us success in the last six years in the Premier League. ” Hopefully we can win and see what happens at the end of the season.”
